The State of Every UFC Division Today

The State of Every UFC Division Today

As we sit here today in the MMA world we are 6 days and 5 nights (that could differ on where you watched the fight) removed from Conor McGregor being knocked out by Dustin Poirier. Some of us fans are not shocked as we know how good that Louisiana tough Poirier is, others just loved seeing McGregor have to shut his mouth again. That’s not why we are here though. With the Michael Chandler win over Dan Hooker that got me thinking. The Lightweight division is in a very interest situation. It’s one of the hottest divisions around. However it’s not the only one and if we talk about one why not talk about them all? Why talk about every division after two exciting Lightweight fights? Well for one why not? Two they’re are some many fun fights in so many divisions that should be promoted like UFC 257, and we should talk about them. Now some divisions are way more fun than others. Nonetheless we’ll talk about them, breakdown the state of the division, tell you about the biggest fights happening in the divisions, and ones that could affect the shake up of the division. We are talking MMA here it’ll be fun.

Heavyweight

Got to start with the big boys in the Heavyweight division. The division is a state of welcoming in a new era. Champion Stipe Miocic won his trilogy fight against former two division champion Daniel Cormier last August. That fight was looked at as a generational fight. Two man with a win a piece against each other, one is going to retire after (Cormier), they’re both older, and proven they can beat up on everyone else in the division. Miocic will defend his title against the true number one contender Francis Ngannou on March 27th. Ngannou was beaten up by Miocic his last fight then actually lost his next fight to Derrick Lewis in a very boring fight back in 2018. Ever since that Lewis loss Ngannou has found his hammer from God fist again. He has been on a four fight winning streak with wins over Curtis Blaydes again, Junior Dos Santos, Cain Velasquez, and Jairzinho Rozenstruik. They were all first round knockouts three were in a less than a minute, the Dos Santos fight lasted 1 minute and 11 seconds. Many were worried he might not get the shot because of the move to Heavyweight from long time Light Heavyweight champion Jon Jones. Who many think is the greatest ever. It’s hard to deny that guy a shot at any belt he wants his resume speaks for itself. Nonetheless the UFC did the right thing and gave the shot to Ngannou. Jones hasn’t been scheduled for his debut at Heavyweight. Personally would like to see Jones go against someone before he takes a big name like Miocic or Ngannou. He needs to feel that heavyweight power, the movement is different, and weight change The Heavyweight division will be a state of halt until Ngannou, Miocic, and Jones run their round robin if you ask me. Especially if Ngannou redeems himself against Miocic it could be awhile before they complete this. Not complaining really a lot great fights and tells us who a goat is between Jones and Miocic. Or maybe Ngannou is? Who knows. They setup a trilogy or at least two fights with Jones. However the fight in March will tell us where we are going in the division in the new era of the Heavyweight division.

Light Heavyweight

A division that really is in a completely new era with the departure of Jon Jones to Heavyweight and Cormier years ago leaving for Heavyweight. Those two held up the division for a very long time. Since Jones vacated the title the two most worthy contenders were Dominick Reyes and Jan Błachowicz. Reyes had a great fight against Jones. Some thought he won the fight and he was the clear number one contender even if Jones didn’t leave. Błachowicz was on a four fight winning with notables wins over Ronaldo Souza, former UFC champion Luke Rockhold, and Corey Anderson. The Rockhold and Anderson knockouts were every impressive he showed why they call him “Polish Power” because that man can hit. Reyes and Błachowicz ran it for the vacant Light Heavyweight championship in September of 2020. Błachowicz knocked Reyes out in the second round. Showing that division ran through him now with a clear victory over the next best around. The UFC is still a business though so they need big fights to compete in the market. They throw Middleweight champion and star Israel Adesanya against Błachowicz on March 6th, 2021. The UFC is really trying to get that Jon Jones vs Israel Adesanya fight but they need to show Adesanya can compete at a heavier weight. While also bulking his star. A Jones vs Adesanya fight would be huge for the UFC. The two hate each other, they don’t like each other, they both talk that s**t, and talk it to each other. That fight will be great. However the hope for that fight will slow down this division again. Also who knows what happens if Adesanya wins the belt will he ever defend it against someone not named Jones? Or will he just hold onto it while he waits for Jones and defend the Middleweight crown? More of his natural weight. If Błachowicz comes with the upset the division will probably getting rolling again proving to Jones that Adesanya couldn’t beat someone from a division Jones beat up on for years. Glover Teixeira who is 41 years old is the clear number one contender and not getting any younger. He fought back from the Jones loss back in 2014 to be a legit contender by changing his style. He is on a five fight winning streak with wins over Anthony Smith and Thiago Santos. Two guys who fought Jones for the belt in the last two years. With a new champion Teixeira deserves to be the first fight whoever the Light Heavyweight champion is. Nonetheless it’s really hard to see where the division is going but it needs reshaping and is caught in between a mega fight so it’ll be held up for awhile.

Middleweight

You see the message here is that if Light Heavyweight  division is held up because the Middleweight champion Israel Adesanya is moving up to fight for the Light Heavyweight championship, that means the Middleweight division is held up as well. In my opinion much worse because the champion is fighting for belts in other divisions. Not saying he’s wrong for that but if he continues to go after big fights he should vacant it. Israel Adesanya has deserved to go get paid he has fought everyone that has taken the fight. He dusted Robert Whittaker who everyone thought was his biggest challenge, he defended the belt against Yoel Romero, then beat up Paulo Costa who was suppose to be the next great in the division . Adesanya rise to the top is quick because how much he fights. Let him chase the Jones fight but time is against him can’t hold up a division for to long. Whittaker has been active since that lost to Adesanya. He has wins over Darren Till and Jared Cannonier. Two top contenders who many thought could get Adesanya to pay more attention to who’s next in his division. Whittaker will be fighting Paulo Costa next. What will be a great fight to see who is probably next up for the belt. Especially if Whittaker wins that means he has beaten everyone but Adesanya. He would be more than deserving of that rematch for the belt. The division has been shaken up a few times over the last year. With Jack Hermansson upsetting. Kevin Gastelum. Gastelum was the closets to beating Adesayna. Then Hermansson being upseted by Marvin Vettori. Darren still joining the division. The division still has many top contenders with Robert Whittaker Jared Cannonier, Darren Till, Marvin Vettori, Paulo Costa, and others. The division lost Yoel Romero with the UFC cutting him because of his contact. Nonetheless the division is still in good shape it just needs its belt to be defended.

4 Darren Till vs 5 Marvin Vettori April 10th, 2021

9 Kelvin Gastelum vs 15 Ian Heinisch February 13th, 2021

Welterweight

The Welterweight division is in a good place right now overall. They have a stable champion in Kamaru Usman who has defended twice with wins over longtime rivals Colby Covington and Jorge Masivdal. He won the belt back in March 2019 which is not enough title defenses in that time. He has had injuries to pull out of his fights against new contender Gilbert Burns. Usman is great fighter and can be the champion a long time which it hurt some people to read that. He is hard to promote as a superstar he doesn’t have that “it” factor or personality. Nonetheless he will get started defending his belt again with the matchup of Gilbert Burns on the next UFC pay per view card UFC 258 on February 13, 2021. Michael Chiesa just got a huge win over Neil Magny last week in the main event on a UFC Fight night. Chiesa has looked real good since moving up to welterweight. Looks to have more energy and his grappling can be more dominant even with the heavier guys. He can be a contender. Cant forget about former teammates Colby Covington and Jorge Masivdal. Would love to have that fight even if it’s not for the belt there’s real bad blood there between Covington and Masivdal. The winner can fight for the belt next it actually seems so perfect of a fight. Leon Edwards looks to take on young phenom Khamzat Chimaevz. Edwards looked real good but deceived to sit out for awhile which made no sense. The division needs to come up with some more contenders which they are because if Usman beats Burns he’s beaten everyone in the top 5 of the division besides Stephen Thompson, and Thompson isn’t in a position yet for a title shot. Usman is clearing out the division but he still has a lot of work to do especially if he fights these guys twice. Welterweight can still be really fun and is an interesting state at the moment. It needs to build some more contenders but does have a good amount weird but fun.

Lightweight

Here’s a big one especially with the recent events. For one of course Dustin Poirier knocking out Conor McGregor making him what seems to be the next for the title shot. The dominant Lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov called it a career after becoming 29-0 against Justin Gaethje. He told his mom he would retire after his last fight because of his father and long time trainer passing away. However apparently he also told his dad before his death he would go 30-0. So very confusing situation but it seems that he won’t be coming back anytime soon. Apparently Khabib told Dana White that these guys aren’t on his level after watching last Saturday’s card. That doesn’t change the fact Poirier is next up for the belt. McGregor may get his name back in there with being the superstar, he may ask for a trilogy. However the fight before theirs on the UFC 257 card in the co main event long time Bellator legend Michael Chandler put on a great performance. He knocked out sixth ranked Dan Hooker in the first round with an overhand right. Hooker just went to war with Piorier last year. He lost but it was hell of a fight that showed Hooker deserved to be discussed. Chandler after being regarded as maybe the best in the world but we just never knew has certainly made his name relevant quick in the UFC. In reality Dustin Piorier vs Michael Chandler should be up next for the vacant Lightweight championship. Maybe run McGregor vs Diaz 3 this a perfect time to do it. If McGregor wins just prompt him to the title shot like you wanted to do anyways. Everyone gets paid and the UFC has a legit champion after Khabib. There’s just one man we are really forgetting. What do you do with Charles Oliveira? He is on a eight fight winning streak with also the most submissions in Lightweight UFC history to boot. He just beat Kevin Lee and Tony Ferguson. Oliveira has made the argument for a title shot and also deserves one. If you’re not chasing money you could put him in there against Poirier and maybe Chandler against Gaethje? It’ll be hard to think Chandler takes that fight after saying he should get a title shot. However he wants to fight the best and a win over Gaethje will show even more why he should fight for the belt. It also will would be hell of a fight. The division is exciting and is in a good spot in regards of talent. If they don’t chase big money fights we can get a lot of fun fights but if they do we can still get a lot fun fights. It’s a great position to be in it’s interesting to see who will be the man left out of the division match making, and will come out on top. Hey MMA tournament for the Lightweight Championship post Khabib? Hey why not? Just saying.

Featherweight

The Featherweight division is going forward but the old guard continues to make noise throughout the division. The current champion Alexander Volkanovski will keep the division rolling by fighting Brian Ortega on March 27th, 2021 in the co main event. Volkanovski won the belt against former champ Max Holloway then “defended” the belt against Holloway in July of 2020. Many people including myself would say Holloway won that fight clearly but the judges gave it to Volkanovski. Which is super questionable. Nonetheless Brian Ortega who took some time off but showed some improvement since we last saw him with a win over Chan Sung Jung the “Korean Zombie” by decision so they are giving him the next title shot. One he clearly won unlike Volkanovski who lost the second fight against Holloway. Major contenders in the Featherweight division haven’t really been active but the one who hasn’t been active who should be is Zabit Magomedsharipov. Say that ten times fast. Zabit’s last fight was against Calvin Kattar back in 2019. Kattar has fought three times since then Zabit not once. Holloway was one of those fights where Holloway hit 435 significant strikes breaking a UFC record. Holloway looked great in that fight. Proving to the world that even if he lost to Volkanovski he deserves a title shot. Especially after that terrible judges decision. If Ortega wins the belt Holloway of course will get a chance for his belt again, he destroyed Ortega in their meeting when Holloway was the champ. Guys in the Featherweight division like Yair Rodriguez, Zabit, Josh Emmet may be more active but it’s hard to know who’s next if no one is fighting really. Making Holloway clearly the only choice. Rodriguez and Zabit should fight in reality that’ll tell us a lot. Volkanovski still needs to do a lot to clear out this division especially with the contenders. Some of them just need to fight each other to figure out who’s next after Ortega and Holloway. Featherweight is still fun and has a lot of fun fights to be made even if it’s the second time some of these guys fight.

Bantamweight

The Bantamweight division has a lot of talent old and young. The champion Petr Yan is on a ten fight winning streak with names that include John Dodson, Jimmy Rivera, Urijah Faber, and Jose Aldo. Yan has looked very impressive in all those fights. He dominated all of them he has amazing striking with his boxing and good ground work. After Henry Cujudo surprisingly retired the UFC needed a new Bantamweight king. The UFC gave Jose Aldo a championship shot against Yan, even after Aldo’s questionable loss to Marlon Moraes probably to give Yan a name people would know in his first title fight, and a thank you for all you did to Aldo. The fight MMA fans wanted which we will be getting is Petr Yan defending his title against Aljamain Sterling, who has looked real domaine lately. Sterling last outing dominated Cory Sandhagen ultimately winning the bout by rear naked choke in the first round. Sandhagen is the second ranked Bantamweight in the UFC, and Sterling made him look barley top 10. That was another notch on the Sterling winning streak which was extended to five after the win. Now on March 6th, 2021 we will get Petr Yan vs Aljamain Sterling for the Bantamweight championship which is one we deserved, and I’m sure fighters do love knowing who’s the best. That fight will tell us. The Bantamweight division doesn’t lack contenders. With Cody Sandhagen, Cody Garbrandt, Rob Font, Marlon Moraes, Dominick Cruz, Jose Aldo, Pedro Munhoz, Jimmie Rivera, Raphael Assuncao, and others. The Bantamweight division has talent young and old. Even with a win over Sterling for Yan he would still have a lot people to fight to clear out the division. He is young so he has time. These fighters do stay after it for example right after his loss to Sterling, Sandhagen went and beat Moraes. Some of these guys have fought each other before. We just need a more clear number one contender after Sterling. In my opinion the Sandhagen against Frankie Edgar fight on February 6th will tell us that. Who knows maybe Henry Cujado comes back to get his belt back. The Bantamweight division is fun and their should be a lot of fun fights in the future.

Flyweight

The Flyweight division may be holding on by a string but it’s not completely dead yet. Champion Deiveson Figueiredo seems to be a really fun fighter and has a ton of personality. He loves to fight. His first title defense against Alex Pérez back in the summer of 2020 was going to be canceled because Figueiredo tested positive for the corona virus. Figueiredo didn’t feel like he was sick so rushed to show that he tested false positive. He succeeded, fought Alex Pérez, and defended his belt within 1:57 seconds in the opening round. Winning the bout by guillotine choke. Figueiredo fought to a draw his last fight with Brandon Moreno so he retained the title. However both men put on a show which is what the Flyweight division needed some fun fights. Demetrius Johnson ran the division for years and made it look easy. Then Cejudo got the belt then after defending against TJ Dillashaw was looking for big fights. Putting the division on hold which is the last thing the division needed especially when you are trying to prove your worth to Dana White. The division lacks contenders at least it appeared since Johnson would just dust these guys until Cejudo came around. Then when they got another star the Flyweights couldn’t get any of that stardom because he didn’t take fights in their division even as champ. Figueiredo can be a star. He’s really fun to watch. Also the Flyweights have real talent they just need to show them off some more. Cody Garbandt a bantamweight actually was going to come down and fight for the title. However the fight was scrapped after his injury. Which if Figueiredo won would of been huge for the division. It would have brought some new eye balls with Garbandt’s name. The division is in a new era step up Flyweights you have a lot of potential the causal don’t know about.

Women’s Featherweight

The Women’s Featherweight division is in a very dark period in its history, as the Lioness dominates over the land. Amanda Nunes won the title to become champ champ against Crus Cyborg in 2019 and really hasn’t defended it since. She’s also really had no one to defend it against. Nunes beat up Felicia Spencer back in June of 2020. The division really does lack contenders. Nunes will defend the belt against Megan Anderson on March 6th, 2021. Anderson really got the shot because she had a nice knockout win in her last bout and their really isn’t anyone else at this point. She lost to Felicia Spencer back in 2018 but then won two fights in a row. At least Nunes will defend it now. The division needs some bulking up don’t really see anyone of these new challengers taking on Nunes or even making it competitive. Hope they do because Nunes could just run rough shot on this division. They are heading in the same direction Men’s Flyweight is. They need some more names and stars until then not really that interesting wouldn’t be shocked if Dana White got rid of the division.

Women’s Bantamweight

Another division that lioness Amanda Nunes powers over with an iron fist. Nunes has defended the belt five times since winning the belt from Miesha Tate in 2016 at UFC 200. Nunes has beaten Valentina Shevchenko (current UFC champion), Raquel Pennington, Holly Holm, Ronda Rousey, and Germaine De Randamie. She looked dominate in all these performances expect the Shevchenko fight. She looked really good that’s why Nunes won the fight but Shevchenko definitely brought Nunes to her limit. That was their second fight Nunes is 2-0 in their matchups. That’s why Shevchenko switched divisions. She was in fighter purgatory. Since then Nunes has ran the division giving her Goat status in women’s MMA. Her striking is amazing and doesn’t seem like people last long enough to get to the ground. When they do she dominates there. Nunes has cleared out the division that’s why when she fought Cris Cyborg for the Women’s Featherweight title it made sense. She can defend both belts since both divisions are struggling to find challengers at this point with Nunes dominance. Nonetheless the division still has many contenders if Nunes wanted to call it a day. Just none that can beat Nunes. The division is getting better with old talent leaving and new talent coming in, it’s just that new talent can’t really challenge the goat yet. There’s no eye popping prospect at Women’s Featherweight. Until there is expect Nunes to dominate the division like Johnson did Men’s Flyweight. Maybe Nunes domination will be like what Jones did to Light Heavyweight division. Hard to find young prospects because why would you join the division where the goat is? Difference is she it’ll do it to two divisions. Maybe Aspen Ladd can improve off her TKO loss from Germaine De Randamie. She looked good last outing with a knockout win last contest. Thought maybe Irene Aldana could make up something but she lost to Holly Holm. Don’t think we want to watch Holly Holm against De Randamie 2 just to see who loses to Amanda Nunes. We did that already but it seems like the only option. Unless you want to run her against Juliana Pena who had a nice win over Sara McMann on McGregor’s card. Pena called out Nunes. Still think she needs another fight for that shot. The division lacks contenders right now. Really good young contenders at that. Nunes has ran the division for years and don’t really see that changing anytime soon.

Women’s Flyweight

If you want to be a women’s fighter in the UFC just know beforehand whatever weight you go you are facing a juggernaut for the championship. Women’s Flyweight is no different. The Women’s Flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko has been as dominant as they come since her return to Flyweight. Her last loss was to Amanda Nunes up at Bantamweight for the title. After the questionable decision which Shevchenko thought she won she retuned to Flyweight. She then beats Joanna Jędrzejczyk (who was a former UFC champion) for the vacant Flyweight belt and hasn’t lost it since. She has beaten up on Jessica Eye which I don’t know how she wasn’t arrested for that knockout, Liz Carmouche, Katlyn Chookagian, and Jennifer Mia. She dominated all those contests. Shevchenko has fought so well it had people saying Nunes vs Shevchenko 3? Even though she already lost to Nunes twice. The second one was close Shevchenko could of definitely closed the gap especially how she looks lately. The division has a lot of good fighters like the ones I mentioned on Shevchenko beaten list. The division stays active and so does the champion. It’s just hard to see anyone of these contenders catching Shevchenko. The UFC might have to run back the Nunes vs Shevchenko because both are running out of options. Hope some of these Flyweights can make it interesting because they are definitely trying. Joanna Calderwood looked good at UFC 257 with the win over Jessica Eye. She will might be next up especially since she hasn’t fought for the title. Shevchenko is close to clearing out the division. Wonder what the UFC will do if she does. Personally see them having her fight new comer to the division Jessica Andrade she’s a former champion and hasn’t fought Shevchenko yet. Andrade just beat Chookagian in her first fight at Flyweight. Andrade has the skill to make the Shevchenko fight fun. Hope it gets booked especially in a division that is looking for contenders.

Women’s Strawweight

The Women’s Strawweight is the most exciting in the women’s fight divisions by far. The first Chinese UFC champion Weili Zhang has been great to watch since joining the UFC. She is 21-1 in her MMA career her only lost being in her first fight. Zhang won the belt with TKO win over Jessica Andrade in just 42 seconds. Her striking is remarkable. That’s why her title defense against former champion Joanna Jędrzejczyk was looked as a must watch for striking fans. They both love to stand up and no one really knows anything about their ground game. The fight lived up to the hype and more. The 2020 fight of the year in my opinion and best women’s fight of all time. Both were just going back and forth every round coming down to the wire. Jędrzejczyk head was like a balloon but was still putting it on Zhang. After five hard rounds Zhang pulled out the close win but man was it fun. Hope Jędrzejczyk stays at Strawweight she looked really good and I’m sure a number two fight between these ladies would be fun. Zhang has plenty of challengers after that. Including someone who has beaten Jędrzejczyk twice in Rose Namajunas. Dana White has stated that’ll probably Zhang next fight. Namajunas being a former champion and we have seen her on the ground. We saw her submit Michelle Waterson back in 2017. Namajunas is worthy contender and will be Zheng biggest challenge yet if the UFC books that fight. Their are plenty of challengers in this division with Yan Xiaonan, Carla Esparza, Nina Ansaroff, Marina Rodriguez, and others. Rodriguez looked great at UFC 257 after knocking out UFC up and comer Amanda Ribas. Zhang has a lot of work to do to clear out this division if she can a lot of tough challenges. Happy to see where the Women’s Strawweight is going should be a lot fun for future fights.

To conclude that’s where we are at in the UFC. As an early fight fan from Forest Griffin winning his Ultimate Fighter days we have come a very long way. Not just multiple men weight classes but multiple women weight classes. The UFC is in a very good place as they can put on some huge fights. Hope they come through on those fights. Hope they fix up the divisions that need some help. Most importantly I hope they promote these champions in the future better. Either way super exciting time in the fight game. Well there it is the state of every UFC division.
