Out With The Old In With The New?
Out With The Old In With The New?
The granddaddy of them all everything that’s happened in the NFL season can be forgotten today. The biggest game of all season the Super Bowl. The NFC Champions young and up incoming LA Rams led by 33 year old head Sean Mcvay. Will be matching up against the sheriffs of the Super Bowl as they are making their 9th Super Bowl appearance in their dynasty Tom Brady and head coach Bill Belichick will lead the New England Patriots into Atlanta on Sunday for a shot at their 6th Super Bowl title. Which would tie the Steelers for the most of all time. Let’s take a look at the battle down south in Atlanta.
The Patriots are trying to ride an underdog mentality going into the big game. Which is hard when you finished 13-3 last year with a loss in the Super Bowl, and this is your ninth appearance in fifteen years, but hey whatever works. Many thought Tom Brady was finally hitting his downward spiral. Not having his greatest year throwing for 4355 yards which ranks seventh in the NFL, only twenty-nine touchdown passes with eleven interceptions, and a QBR of 97.7 which ranked twelfth in the league. Sense Brady didn’t have a MVP year people thought he was done. One thing we should of learned by now is to never count him out. The Rams will be playing a Patriots team that is more dominated by the run than the pass which never happens. The Patriots will look to give the ball to Sonny Michel and James White to take heat off their 41 year old quarterback. The Rams offense is very explosive led by offensive genius in Mcvay but the Patriots aren’t to bad either. The Patriots are ranked fourth in points per game. How can the Patriots still keep scoring even with a old timer at quarterback? Well it was just mentioned, the running game. The Patriots are fifth in rushing yards per game. They soften you up with the run that gives Brady options with play action, and the last thing you as a defense want is to give Brady options. A lot of success by the offense can also be worn by the offensive line. They are second in sack percentage. That means they give up the second fewest sacks in the league. You can’t hit Brady so he doesn’t feel it in his old age. The Patriots will look to run the ball, give the best quarterback in nfl history the ball on third and short if they have too, try to control the game with play action, then ware down the clock. The Patriots are second in time of possession the method of you can’t score if you don’t have the ball has done them wonders. The Patriots defense doesn’t let the opposing offense hold the ball as their second in opponents time of possession. The Rams will look to run the ball with Todd Gurley and CJ Anderson which will be a tough task because the last three games the Patriots are second in opponents rushing yards. They don’t let you do to them what they are doing to you. Giving two weeks to prepare is usually good for Bill Belichick and Tom Brady let’s see if they can do it again.
Now the young sparkys in grand daddy of them all. The Rams are a flashy Los Angeles team led by young head coach Sean Mcvay and third year quarterback Jared Goff. Goff first season under Jeff Fisher back in St. Louis was not a good one. Many people were disappointed in first overall selection. The Rams brought in Sean Mcvay and that’s when everything changed. Now two seasons later, in a new city in LA, and now they are are going to the Super Bowl. In 2018 under Mcvay Goff has had a wonderful season. Ranking fourth in the league in passing yards with 4,688 and sixth in touchdown passes with thirty two. What’s taken the pressure off of Goff is similar to Brady which is the running game. The Rams have maybe the best running back in the league in Todd Gurley. Gurley was third in rushing yards and first in rushing touchdowns in the NFL. He has slowed down sense his knee injury in November but he will still be a factor. The Rams have been running with recently signed CJ Anderson who last game against the Saints in the NFC Championship game was the main running back throughout the game. However the running game and high flying offense the Rams have is what got them to 13-3 and NFC Champions. The Rams are second in the league in points per game. That shouldn’t scare the Patriots to much as they just played the number one scoring offense in the league in the Chiefs and MVP Patrick Mahomes. However the Rams can hit you with passing and running. The Rams manage to stay on the field a lot they are the best at getting a first down. Ranking one in the league with the most per game. The Patriots defense can not be out there for long constantly. A shootout is what the Patriots will want with Brady and Goff. The Rams are third in rushing yards per game. Same as the Patriots if they can soften up your defense that gives Mcvay options. That’s when the Rams will start to pile on the points. To be in the Super Bowl you have to be able to block for your quarterback as both teams do, the Rams are sixth in sacks percentage per game. Not as good as New England but it’s still really hard to get to the young quarterback. Goff doesn’t feel the pressure which gives him the time he needs to make decisions. Unlike Brady who gets ball out so fast defensive players can’t get to him. One way the Rams can get to Brady is through Aaron Donald. The best defensive tackle in the league who also has the most sacks in the a league with 20.5. Donald will have to be there in the middle getting in Brady’s face if the Rams look to win this football game. No one can let Brady relax in the pocket and expect to win. Especially on third down which the Rams have been good at getting off the field ranking third on the third down stops. However they are playing the best quarterback ever on third down. Defense wins championships which ever steps up a little more can be the defining factor. The Rams will look to get out with the old Patriots and bring a new look Rams to the mountain top.
Both teams are surprisingly similar besides the old quarterback and head coach for New England against the young quarterback and young head coach in Los Angeles. Both teams have average defenses nothing really bad really great. The Patriots usually win by being more discipline. The Patriots win the turnover battle often but also win the penalty battle. Then with holding the ball the longest it makes it very hard for opposing teams to win. The Rams in 2018 have done the same thing as both teams rank in the top ten in penalty yards, turnovers, and time of possession. Both also look to run the ball a lot both being fifth in rushing attempts. Similar teams on the football field but different in narrative.
Could this be Brady’s last run? Could this finally be the last game we see Brady play in the Super Bowl? Will the dynasty that everyone seems to hate finally come to an end? Will their be a new look for the NFL in the Rams? That’s for these two teams to decide.
