Goat Talk’s NBA MVP Race
Goat Talk’s NBA MVP Race
The MVP race is very interesting in the 2018-2019 season thus far. As teams are playing way better than expected. Like the Nuggets who are the first seed in the West, the Clippers who are a top team in West so far, the Bucks who’ve been one of the prestige’s teams in the East this season, and the West just being so close everyone is in it expect the Suns. Or the fact how some teams have struggled so far for example the Celtics and Rockets. How your team plays is big in the MVP race sense it’s about how valuable you are, and putting your team over the hump for wins is what makes someone valuable. Here’s our top 5 MVP candidates thus far. 5.Nikola Jokic- Jokic has brought the Nuggets to the mountain top of the West in the first seed up to this point in the season. Even with injuries to Paul Millsap (broken toe), Gary Harris (hip) & Will Barton (core muscle surgery), and Isaiah Thomas (hip) he continues to elevate the Nuggets to win. His 18.1 ppg, 10.2 trb maybe not eye popping for MVP but for a big man he also averages 7.4 assists. He shoots 84% from the free throw line which is better than Lebron James, Joel Embiid, and Giannis Antetokounmpo. The Nuggets point guard Jamal Murray has played well this season but the offense is ran through the Serbian big man in Jokic. Jokic value to the Nuggets always can’t be shown through numbers but it’s not like he doesn’t have impressive ones.
4.Kawhi Leonard- The Raptors took the biggest risk in the offseason trading away loyal Demar DeRozan for stewing Kawhi Leonard from the Spurs. No one questioned Leonard’s ability which he continues to show us why he was the Finals MVP and a big piece in the Spurs last title. Leonard has the Raptors at the top of the East. Since the Raptors are 6-1 without Leonard people would say he isn’t that valuable. No that shows how deep the Raptors are but they will ask more from Leonard from mid April onward. Leonard averages 26.3 ppg, 8.4 trb, 3.1 ast, and 1.8 steals per game. Leonard still plays amazing defense. Leonard is taking the Raptors to the next level, and if he can get them past the Eastern Conference 2nd round playoff there’s no reason the Raptors risk can’t pay off.
3.Anthony Davis- The Pelicans as a team are around .500 but only a game out of the 8th seed as well as 8 other teams are in the West. That’s how close the West is. Anthony Davis numbers value is very clear. Since the Pelicans would probably be worse than the Suns without Davis. Davis is having a huge year statistically wise. Davis averages 28 ppg, 12.4 trb, 4.7 assists, with 2.8 blocks per game. Now if they can get a team around Davis we can finally see what kind of superstar he is.
2.Lebron James- You could make the argument Lebron James could win the MVP every year. In 2018 nothing has changed. Since Lebron has taken a group of young talent with his group of misfits to the 4th seed in the West but clearly playing like a top team. James averages 28 points, 7 assists, and 7.3 rebounds per game; while shooting 52% from the field. Lebron makes everyone around him better every year and at 33 doesn’t look like that has changed.
1.Giannis Antetokounmpo- Antetokounmpo has been most impressive this NBA season making the Bucks from an 7th seed who couldn’t beat an injured Celtics team last year, to maybe the 1st seed in the 2019 playoffs. Antetokounmpo incredible height, wingspan, and athletic ability makes him basically unstoppable. He has brought them from being blown out by the Warriors, Raptors, and Celtics to barley losing to them or winning as they did to the Raptors on the road. Antetokounmpo averages 26.8 points, 6 assists, and 13.2 rebounds per game, as he shoots an impressive 59% from the field. Antetokounmpo is the clear MVP favorite.
