Top 10 young Quarterbacks to start a franchise with today.
Top 10 young Quarterbacks to start a franchise with today.
- 10. Baker Mayfield: Yes seems to early to put any of these young quarterbacks on the list but it’s never too early to make predictions. Mayfield looks to have a lot of upside. He also seems to be a better version skillswise and behavior wise than Johnny Manziel. Behavior issues keeps you off the list such as Jameis Winston. Yes he’s only played one preseason game which people get way to caught into the hype but here’s what we know. If you need someone to overcome the odds Mayfield was the guy going from walk on to Heisman trophy winner. Mayfield can run, has a strong arm, and the personality to be a superstar or even a stable quarterback for the Browns future if all goes well which is tough for Cleveland. However with Tyrod Taylor Mayfield has the advantage of not being rushed into the field which we believe will help him most.
- 9. Blake Bortles: Yes, Bortles he’s not so trash as people may think. He is going into his fifth season as the captain of the Jaguars ship. This is the year where quarterbacks are suppose to start to form after their fourth season. Bortles was the starter for the Jags run to AFC Championship game last season where he lost to the G.O.A..T. Tom Brady. Brady, who willed his team to another Super Bowl. Bortles however threw for 293 yards, 23/36 on pass attempts, with one touchdown no picks. He did similar the week before against the Steelers he didn’t win the AFC championship but he put his team in a good place to win against two elite teams. He’s thrown for over 3,000 yards three out of four seasons, and his interceptions have gone down every year. He’s a big quarterback, nice arm, and athletic with a west coast offense with a great defense Bortles fits great for the Jags, and development appears to be going well.
- 8. Patrick Mahomes II: The Chiefs have gone all in on Mahomes as they should. Mahomes first game against Broncos showed a lot of the skills he has, and how Andy Reid is going to game plan around him. We were told when Mahomes was coming out of Texas Tech he had a strong arm well he’s got that. The arm also appears to be very accurate.
- Mahomes got to sit behind Alex Smith a good quarterback who is not to bad to learn behind last season. As Smith has playoff experience, and has been through many experiences throughout his career. The Chiefs got rid of Smith for Mahomes. The Chiefs from the front office all the way down to the players are big on Mahomes. Expect a lot of spread offense from the Chiefs this season as they may want to air out Mahomes and show off his young talent.
- 7. Marcus Mariota: Mariota does not play on a offense for him. As the Titian’s liked to pound the ball with a run first offense. He didn’t have a great season last year but still led his team to his first playoff birth. If the Titian’s give him more chances he can make the offense be pass first. As Mariota can use his legs, as he is athletic as well as accurate with the football. Yes his fifteen picks from last season wouldn’t show that but there is more to that stat. The offense he is in doesn’t use his mobility as much as the Titan’s should. Titans should work more spread offense. However expect him to bounce back from his fifteen pick season, he’s mature, willing to learn makes me confident in him. I still put my chips in on Mariota.
- 6. Sam Darnold: Darnold seems to be high on the list since he hasn’t even played a regular season game yet but already there is hype around the young quarterback. Even Josh Norman said after joint practice compared him to Carson Wentz and Dak Prescott which is the young quarterback club to be a part of. Darnold in my opinion is the best quarterback from the 2018 draft. One issue scouts had with Darnold coming out of college was his turnover problem when pressured but the films shows when pressured by the Falcons he always kept two hands on the ball already showing improvement into a problem. He picked up blitzes well while also staying in the pocket to throw the ball. Darnold in his first game looked nice not to completely off of that but Darnold even this year early I would bet on.
- 5. Dak Prescott: Prescott in his first season behind a great running game, offensive line, good receiver core, and defense lead his team to the divisional round in his first season. His second season didn’t go as well as Elliot missed six games and his receiving core got much weaker. He’s however still very smart and mature at the quarterback which is what you need when you’re the quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys. Prescott is ready to be a leader and has no problem being one. He doesn’t turn the ball over, has accuracy, can run, and certainly can lead the Cowboys the a Super Bowl someday. He threw for twenty-one touchdowns, threw eleven interceptions, but for 2,964 yards with much room to improve. He will improve as he is willing to learn and grown as a player.
- 4. Jared Goff: Goff made major improvements last season going from his rookie year to his sophomore year in the league. As the Rams took everyone off guard with not just Goff’s surprising increasing ability to play quarterback but to put it all together to have a good football team. Goff brought the Rams to a 11-5 record with a playoff berth but lost to the Falcons in the Wildcard round. However mass improvement from Goff. Goff footwork, quickness, ability to read defenses, and throw a good ball have all improved. He has amazing accuracy as he thrown footballs in peach baskets from forty yards away. His coach Sean McVay definitely plays to Goff strengths which will help Goff become the best quarterback he can be which could be Hall of Famer status.
- 3. DeShaun Watson: We should of know that Watson was ready for the big time for his play at Clemson. Especially in the National Championship games against Alabama. Watson took the Texans starting job last year and that’s all he needed to take the league by storm. He was in MVP contention before he suffered a torn ACL in a November practice. He threw for 402 yards with four touchdowns against the Seahawks legion of boom. Kam Chancellor and Richard Sherman were both at full health for that game. He has great quarterback IQ, out of this world athleticism, great running ability, with a very accurate tight spiral ball. His arm isn’t going to throw anyone off but if the Texans change to a play action offense instead of a throw down field offense with DeAndre Hopkins they can win a lot of games. Jalen Ramsey wouldn’t say something nice about Watson if he didn’t see it especially Watson being in his division. The future at quarterback is bright in Houston. Let’s see how he bounces back from the ACL injury.
- 2. Jimmy Garoppolo: Bill Belichick wasn’t big on trading Jimmy G for a reason as he showed out in San Francisco. He took the 49ers from a 0-10 season to a 6-10 record to end the season. He turns 28 in the middle of the season but has talent to make the 49ers top contender for the next 10 season. He isn’t most athletic quarterback but his ability to stay in the pocket throwing with accuracy and power is what does is for Garoppolo. Remember it’s the pocket quarterback that wins in the NFL which Jimmy G does better than almost any other young quarterback.
- 1. Carson Wentz: He’s probably the rarest talent at quarterback we’ve seen in awhile. Looks like a young Aaron Rodgers. Can throw on the run, can run, strong arm, and can throw with precision and accuracy. He’s athletic, big, and strong not much more you could ask for from a quarterback. The biggest problem for young quarterbacks usually is getting over the hump and being consistent on third down. Wentz has already gotten by that problem as he has a 65% completion percentage on third with a 123.7 QBR on third down. He was the front runner for MVP before his freak accident injury that tore his ACL. He had thirty three touchdowns with only seven interceptions. Threw for over 3,000 passing yards with almost 300 rushing yards. Wentz is the whole package and is the best young Quarterback to build a team around.
